Historic Board of Review

The Historic Board of Review (HBR) is concerned with elements of development, redevelopment, and preservation that affect visual quality in the Downtown City of Greenfield Historic District. The current area that is governed by the HBR is essentially the National Courthouse Square Historic District with additional buildings added to the map that flank State Street and Main Street for a few blocks outside of the Courthouse Square District. the Historic District is a mapped area that is approved by the Greenfield Common Council.

The Historic Board of Review consists of five voting members appointed by the Mayor and approved by City Council. The HBR meets once a month to approve plans and issue "Certificates of Appropriateness" for any conspicuous change to any historic or non-historic facade seen from a public way; as well as to consider any proposed demolition.

The City of Greenfield is fortunate to also have a National Residential District that is not regulated by the HBR but that does provide property owners with tax credit opportunities for appropriate renovations.
