Police Officers

Our Patrol Division is commanded by the Road Captain and consists of 28 officers patrolling the streets of Greenfield 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each Squad is led by a Lieutenant and one Sergeant who oversee the activities of the Patrolmen on the squad. Officers work 12 hour shifts. Officers work Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday the first week and Wednesday and Thursday of the second week of the pay period. There are 2 squads for day shift and 2 squads for night shift, working opposite day off schedules.

Day shift runs from 6am to 6pm. Night shift runs from 6pm to 6am. Our Reserve Officers work on the road on both shifts on varying days of the month.

Officers attend in-depth and intense training at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy for 16 weeks. After ILEA training, they train for approximately 240 hours with our Field Training Officers to be evaluated and introduced to practical use of the training and to departmental procedure.

Officers are also required to meet a State of Indiana minimum of 24 hours of training per year in various areas of law enforcement with most officers far exceeding this requirement. The department also holds classes in criminal law updates, defensive tactics, domestic violence, CPR/First Aid, Emergency Vehicle Operations, weapons training several times per year, as well as various other topics to maintain the Officers' expertise. Money collected from accident reports and court fees from traffic violations is used to pay for officer continuing education.
